CLAY TALK

Storing mosaic pieces

12/12/2019

I doubt that anyone has invented the perfect storage for a zillion little (and large) mosaic pieces.  I use bowls, dishes, old cottage cheese containers and some purchased craft storage containers for that purpose.  It is fun to lay out all my pieces in their respective containers as I start to make a mosaic!  Sometimes the variety of pieces can be overwhelming and sometimes I don't have quite the right piece!

I took the leap and joined the Treasure Valley Artist Alliance.   It is my hope that this group will provide a venue to learn, share and have additional opportunities to display my work here in the Treasure Valley.

It's been a long flight and a busy day and this little bird has found a picket fence to rest on for a bit.

Attaching Mosaic Pieces to Hardibacker

Today was a gluing day - mosaic pieces to the board I use called hardibacker.  There are many steps in the process of making a mosaic and this is just one of them.  The next steps involve cutting angle iron and welding for the frame.  Adding grout is the very last step - photos to follow on all these steps!

Energized for more mosaic work

Just got back home from a long weekend in the snowy mountains of central Idaho.  Such getaways are beneficial for the creative process; seeing new things, being in a new environment.  I have fresh ideas for new mosaic pieces and am excited to get back to my studio!  We saw some amazing wildlife just outside our cabin door!

kiln day!

Welcome to my blog!  Short ramblings about clay and maybe sometimes Labradors, grandchildren, gardening and quilting.  The kiln is almost to temperature for a glaze load (2145 degrees).  Once it kicks off I will have to patiently wait until it cools before opening.  This HAS to be the hardest part of the clay process, mainly because I do not possess a vast amount of patience...…….

This load has some new colors I am anxious to see.  A box arrived from Clay Arts Center this week with 5 new pints of color - muted greens, a couple of earth tone browns and a mellow yellow.  It is amazing how some fire better than others and it is basically a crap shoot to find just the right application to make the color pop.  Pictures to follow!  Check back......
